Reader Response- April
Reader Response
I am responding to Yukon HO by Bill Watterson. I have read 42 out of 116 pages. This text is fiction.
The main characters are Hobbes and Calvin. The genre of this text is Fantasy. I believe this because it talks about a talking tiger and magic carpets and living in 2-D and all these other unrealistic events. The setting is near Calvin’s house and mostly outside in Calvin’s yard or in a park and it takes place in modern time. The conflict is that Calvin and Hobbes always disagree and end up fighting. The theme is friendship because Calvin and Hobbes are always playing together and always together and eat, sleep and chill together, all the time. The protagonist is Calvin and Hobbes. They are both good. There is no bad guy overall.
Retell
This text is a comic about two good buddies who are always doing mischievous things. What I really want to remember is the part when Calvin tried hitting his friend-Susie with a snowball in summer. He saved the snowball in his freezer and he wanted to hit Susie with it and he missed and Susie got him harder. The character I like best is Hobbes because I think his name is really neat and unique and I like how he is a talking tiger who is scared of bugs under his bed. I also admire him because he really likes antelopes and he always gets revenge back on Calvin. My favourite part of the text was when Calvin used his “magic” rug and flew into the city and to his father’s office window. This is because you don’t always see your son flying out your office window and I like magical objects. The author got me interested when Hobbes never came and pushed Calvin down when he came home from school. This is because Hobbes is usually very hyper and loves Calvin and always goes around him and he didn’t show up in one part which surprised me.
Relate
The flying carpet event reminded me off the story Aladdin because he is always flying around in his magical carpet. The character –Susie reminds me of myself a little because she never lets anyone go and always gets them back. She also reminds me of myself because she and I both believe that girls and boys are the same and shouldn’t be treated differently. If I could be any character in this book I would be Calvin because he is very naughty and does lots of interesting things. He is very creative and has a wild imagination. When Calvin and his family went canoeing, it reminded me off when my brother went canoeing in Cuba and he failed and flipped over. Calvin and Hobbes remind me of little kids when they use their artistic imaginations and pretend they are flying and going back in time and doing all these fascinating things.
Reflect
When I read this book, I think of children and how they use their imaginations and have lots of fun. I believe that the illustrations were a great visual and helped understand the story more. I think this text is unrealistic because it talks about talking tigers and the events are very unrealistic. It has magic carpet rides and outer space aliens and etc. This text makes me want to be a little kid again and have all the adventurous fun again. When I read this text I felt very pleased because it is a nice story and doesn’t have anything sad or depressing in it and it is a very happy selection with lots of joy and creativity. If I could speak to the author I would ask why he chose a talking tiger to be Calvin’s best friend. I learned that you can do everything if you have a little bit of imagination and creativity.
